You just got pierced and you’re wondering how to care for your new piercing? Aftercare, cleaning, and cleaning are essential for proper healing. It’s important to read and follow each step carefully, otherwise you could develop an infection.
Cleaning solutions for your piercing
Use one or both of the following solutions to heal piercings:
1. A sterile, packaged saline solution (without additives, read the label) is a gentle choice for aftercare. Contact lens solution should not be used for aftercare. Wound irrigation saline solution is available in spray form at pharmacies throughout North America.
2. Sea salt mixture: Dissolve 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon (0.75 to 1.42 grams) of non-iodized (iodine-free) sea salt in one cup (8 oz / 250 ml) of warm distilled or bottled water. A stronger mixture is not better; too strong a saline solution can irritate the piercing.
Cleaning instructions for body piercings
● Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
● Soak your piercing in saline for five to ten minutes once or more per day. Pour a cup of warm saline solution over the area to create a suction effect.
● If your piercer suggests using soap, gently lather around the piercing and rinse as needed with an antimicrobial soap, ideally in the shower. Do this as your last step before going outside.
● Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap from the piercing. It is not necessary to rotate the jewelry through the piercing.
● DRY by gently patting with clean, disposable paper towels. Cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on the jewelry, causing injury.
